We are now training at Llys Talybont Sports Centre Thursday evenings from 8pm to 9.30pm.

You’ll find us on the tennis courts right by reception (look for the big yellow posts!).

All first sessions are free, so please come along, say hello and have a go!

 

Hi all,

Just to remind everyone, we have a game on thursday during the second
half of our training session against Uni 2.

Games are an hour long, 4 boys, 4 girls and we can make 2 subs.

The plan is to pick the team before the game and give everyone a
chance to see how a game is played.

Double boost for Welsh korfball

Cardiff Dragons Korfball Club has received a double boost after securing sponsorship from Cardiff-based flooring company, Westco, which has been match-funded by the Sports Council for Wales.

The leading laminate and wood flooring firm has sponsored the club’s kit for the 2009-2010 season for £400, and the club will receive a further £400 from Sportsmatch Cymru to support the club’s drive to attract new players to the club.

Nick Gibbs, managing director of Westco, said, “As a long-established Cardiff firm, Westco is keen to support organisations in the local community.

“We’d not heard of korfball before but we thought it would be a good opportunity to get involved with a sport that’s fast-growing and attracting many new players around Cardiff. We’re going to get some of staff playing too!”

Sian Hunt, chair of Cardiff Dragons Korfball Club, said, “We’re really grateful to Westco for their support of the club and are really pleased this has been match-funded by the Sports Council to help us attract new players to try korfball.

“The funds have given Cardiff Dragons a real boost and will mean we can continue to grow the club and ensure that korfball remains alive and kicking in Wales! We’re always looking for new players who can join us at Howells School on a Tuesday night for outdoor training over the summer.”

Based on Penarth Road in Cardiff, Westco supplies flooring and accessories to large DIY stores and independent flooring retailers. The company currently employs 50 staff in customer and product support, manufacturing, design and sales.

Sportsmatch Cymru is a Welsh Assembly Government business incentive scheme for sport in Wales, managed by the Sports Council for Wales. It is designed to encourage more business backing for grassroots sport by matching new or additional sponsorship pound-for-pound.

Chair of the Sports Council for Wales, Philip Carling, said, “Businesses in Wales play a huge part in the sporting success of our nation and we can only continue to excel if we invest in tomorrow’s champions now.

“In return, sports sponsorship offers businesses the opportunity to achieve commercial marketing objectives by raising brand awareness and increasing customer loyalty.”

The Cardiff Korfball Tournament is back and better than ever.

We have a new venue this year to accommodate our ever growing tournament but will still be providing 5 pitches, running the popular long shot competition and offering a BBQ and soft drinks to purchase on the day with bacon sandwiches available on arrival.

Our social for the evening will be on the same site with camping available on-site as well. Please let us know in advance if you would like to camp.

Entry Fee is £35 with a £5 reduction if you pay before 15th July.

We had our start of season meal at the Bay of Bengal on Friday, and a good time was had by all. We had planned to choose the names for the Dragons teams entering the Welsh League democratically at the meal, but Sian had to step in to prevent both teams being named after cheap jibes at Joey’s sexuality. We did get a shortlist together though, which the committee will impose dictatorially on everyone else. Democracy just doesn’t work, people.

We also now have some matches coming up, so people should start making space in their diaries.

First on the 18th October is the Cardiff University Freshers Tournament. We’re entering a team in this all day tournament, and we’ll be looking for as many beginners to play as possible. Second teamers are next in priority, but if a few first teamers want to come along and help out that’d be great too. There’s a social afterwards for anyone who wants to get drunk with lots of 18 year olds in fancy dress (theme: the letter K).

The Welsh league starts on the 25th October and both the as yet unnamed Dragons teams will be in action away at Cardiff City teams. The exact times are yet to be determined, but the preliminary hall booking at Howells School is between 10 and 1.45. All members of the club who want to play will get at least some game time, so please make sure you’re free.

Finally, the first team have been drawn away at North Downs in the first round of the EKA Cup on Sunday the 2nd November, with Bec 3 as the other opposition. The Cup is always tough, but that draw gives us 2 competitive games, assuming we can get something close to our best team out.

A lack of girls available meant this game had to be forfeited and a mixed assortment of firsts, seconds and uni players was assembled in order to give Cyclones a game.
