Cardiff Tournament “Huge Success”
Cardiff’s first ever attempt to host a tournament proved very enjoyable and seems set to be a regular event. It was won by “Is it ‘cos i’m a Londoner”. S4C came along to film it too, which might wash away the horrible memory of when they filmed Cardiff Uni on an icy car park in Caernafon.
Cardiff City and Cardiff Dragons co-hosted their first ever summer korfball tournament at Howells School, Llandaff.
Throughout the day, eight teams battled it out for the trophy, including a team from Holland, three teams from Cardiff, two from Bristol, one team from London and a team from Woking.
As the sun came out at 10am, the competition hotted up on the pitches, and the tournament got off to a storming start. Cardiff’s ‘Algarve Albion’ faced Horfield on pitch one and Bristol City battled it out with Woking on pitch two.
The first round of matches continued until a half time break for lunch where players refuelled at the barbeque and sought much-needed shade.
The second half of the day started with the first round of semi-finals, where the Dutch team faced Cardiff’s ‘Can’t Touch This’ to win 4-2. After a 5-5 draw, ‘Algarve Albion’ were unlucky to lose to the ‘Londoners’ on penalties.
After a short break, the battle for third and fourth place kicked off. ‘Algarve Albion’ defeated ‘Can’t Touch This’ with a final score of 9-4. At the other end of the table, Bristol City ended up winners of the plate competition.
The Londoners faced the Dutch team in a closely contested final. The match ended in a 9-9 tie break which led onto a tense penalty shoot out. Scoring four penalties out of five, the Londoners scooped victory and claimed their title as winners of Cardiff’s very first summer tournament.
The Londoners included some Welsh international players including the Welsh coach, Steve Jones.
Off the pitch, the competition continued throughout the day with one-on-one sumo wrestling in hired padded suits. Together with a busy barbeque, raffle and evening celebration, the Cardiff teams raised funds to go towards new posts, new kit and hall hire.
